  • 2 tbsp instant espresso powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (cold and cut into small pieces)
  • ¾ cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream (cold)
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 tbsp heavy whipping cream (for glaze)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1 tsp instant espresso powder (for glaze)
  • 1 tbsp brewed coffee (or espresso) (for glaze)
  • 12 tbsp milk or cream (or water) (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, and espresso powder.
  3. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Whisk together cream and vanilla separately; add to dry ingredients and mix gently until just combined.
  5. Turn out dough onto a floured surface and shape into an 8-inch circle; cut into triangles.
  6. Chill for 30 minutes on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown; cool on a wire rack.
  8. Prepare glaze by mixing powdered sugar, espresso powder, brewed coffee, and milk; drizzle over cooled scones.
